Home Remodeling Austin – Tarrytown Remodel

This home remodeling Austin project goes back to 1971.  We were U.T. students, and living in married student housing on Lake Austin Blvd.  These were old WWII army barracks that had been moved onto U.T. land.  (We had no AC, so followed the example of others, and put a sprinkler on the roof.)

There was an ad in the paper about a house that was “walking distance from Tarrytown Shopping Center.”  We rode bikes over to find the place.  Charlie Betts at Franklin Savings made us a loan for the property, with the cautioning words, “It needs everything.”  We paid $11,000 for the little house, and this became our first project.  Thanks for visiting our Tarrytown remodel project.

In about 1977, we gutted the place down to studs and remodeled it.  A workman helped us burn years of paint off with something that looked like a toaster on stick.  The house survived, but don’t ever do this!  This Old House has some better ideas for paint removal.

A 3- story addition was added on to the original 1949 bungalow.  The house now had a family room, master bedroom and bath, and an office space.

Here is a photo of Jim re-building the front deck on in the late 80’s.   By 2014 it was worn out, along with a lot of other things on this old house.  It was time to re-visit our Tarrytown bungalow remodel again.
