This traditional ranch style home was built in 1979, so as you might expect, it had popcorn ceilings. Builders often got by with just a single float of the ceiling sheetrock joints. Overhead work was expensive to get done. They could omit multiple floats of the sheetrock, plus a texture layer and a paint layer. A coating of popcorn acoustic eliminated three phases of overhead work.

We’ve seen some painted popcorn ceilings, and the color just makes them look worse. White is the only color that works for them. And, we’ll say up front – we don’t like heavy, lumpy popcorn ceilings in the room. It’s best to attack it early.

So, again resorting to Craigs List, we found Cliff Tibbs, a specialist in removing popcorn ceilings. He offered a package deal: Remove the popcorn, float the joints, spray on a coat of sealer, add a light orange peel texture, and then add a coat of paint. We were very pleased with his price, and he came to work right away.

The workmen wet the ceiling with a water sprayer, and then scraped off the popcorn layer. It fell off easily, but made a big mess that had to be cleaned up. (Note: When removing a popcorn ceiling, put plastic down on the floor.)

They hand-floated the tape joints and nails.

Sheetrock under popcorn has often darkened with age, as you can see here. Dark spots will bleed through the paint, if the ceiling is not sealed first. A coat of sealer, such as Kilz, needed to be sprayed on before the paint coat.

Another texture decision: We had all the wall texture redone as well. The old texture was too uneven and done in mixed styles – everything from heavy splatter to drag down. Ugly wall texture is like an elephant in the room. If you don’t deal with it, it will keep everything from looking as good.
