Ranch House Plans Austin
Thanks for visiting our ranch house plans Austin post! This is about a house in the Northwest Hills area – a beautiful part of central Austin. We fell in love with the corner lot and tall oaks, but the unfortunately we could not make use of the house. The house had to go…
Although we tore the structure down, the original foundation was kept. Jim thought of some ingenious ways to re-purpose the spaces and improve on the old ranch house plans. Ranch homes are popular in the neighborhood, and we love the style. These homes can be improved by opening walls. The closed, dark interior that worked in 1969 is not what most folks like today. We wanted an open, outdoorsy feel.
You can see in the photo that the original living room had a dropped down floor that formed a half circle around the fireplace. Why on earth was this done? It was a falling hazard, and made furniture placement impossible!
Old Ranch House Plan
While we were working on this project, one of the neighbors came over and brought a copy of the original brochure for this house from 1969. It had been in the Parade of Homes. So it was a special house at the time.
New Modern Ranch Plan
The kitchen, dining, living, and study were opened to form a single large space. The old fireplace was removed, and a new one added on the end wall. The old dining became the new study, with a barn door. The old courtyard was taken in, and became an exterior porch and interior foyer. The back patio was made into a screened porch. The tiny 4th bedroom became the master closet.
