Tarrytown Remodel Kitchen

We worked hard to revive our old 1949 house in central Austin. With appliances, sheet vinyl, and fixtures dating back to our 1977 remodel, we had lots of work to do on our Tarrytown remodel kitchen phase.

Thank you for joining us! We are just diy remodelers, and only occasionally do a project. But, we always enjoy visiting with our clients about updating their houses.

Kitchen Before

The cabinets from our remodel in 1977 lasted well for many years. The inset cabinets doors are still a good fit for today’s modern style. The cabinets had good plywood boxes and big drawers. (We did some things right, back then!)

Kitchen Before

Here’s another look at the old kitchen, looking toward the old wood burning stove. (Don’t worry, it’s going.) The kitchen layout was OK. It just needed all new finishes. One problem was the old sheetvinyl floor. We considered Marmoleum, but it was surprisingly expensive. And, we wanted to connect spaces with the same floor material. So we extended wood floors into the kitchen space.

Kitchen Before

Removing the old cook top was a must. All appliances were replaced. Note: As long as the dishwasher and other appliances were out, we put Borax powder in the areas behind them. This is a good long term roach deterrent, placed in areas that are not reachable by pets and children.

Kitchen After

The cabinets boxes were kept, and painted white. We debated using gray on the lower cabinets, but decided to keep it simple. Going all white, let the wood floor and stainless features stand out.

The backsplash is a narrow subway tile – 2 x 8″. The tile came from the Tile Guy on Anderson Lane. He is pretty reasonable.

White Silestone was used on the counters. We went through Home Depot for the Silestone, and were satisfied with the job. They contracted it out to Stone Systems.

Two strands of cable lights replaced the ugly old white fan. (Only one strand is up in the photo.) The cable lights are a great way to light the whole kitchen.

The result was a clean, updated look. We were pleased with our Tarrytown remodel kitchen phase.
