Tarrytown Remodel – Bedrooms & Baths

This is the exterior of our old 1949 cottage after an extensive remodel. In this post we will take a look at choices and colors of our Tarrytown remodel bedrooms & baths phase.

Master Bedroom Before

The Colorado contemporary look was in style in the 1970’s. Rough cedar siding was often used on walls and ceilings. Here we used it on the master ceiling. Today this seems too heavy handed. And it was not a good fit for the look we were going for: 1949 bungalow simply updated.

The brown stain on doors and trim tended to make them stand out. Why emphasize narrow baseboard and door trim? The result was a busy space that distracted from the pretty tree top view.

Master Bedroom After

Here is the master bedroom simplified with white paint. The cedar board ceiling added some texture on the ceiling, but was toned down with white paint. (Benjamin Moore’s White Dove) We used a “direct to metal” paint from Sherwin Williams to touch up the old window frames. Note: The window frames looked a lot newer with this paint.

Master Bath Before

The master had an old pre-fab shower from the ’70’s. This had outlived its useful life, for sure. The master bath in this house was small, which was OK, as long as it was a pleasant space to be in. And, it was not pleasant. It was creepy.

We put in a European glass shower door and tiled the walls up to the ceiling with large white subway tile. Gray tile was used on the floor. The White Dove paint color was a good match with the white tiles used in bathrooms and kitchen. We tried other whites, but they were not white enough. They looked yellowish next to the white tile.

Note: All wall texture in the house was redone in smooth finish. Wall texture is subtle, but we feel that it carries a lot of weight in the finished look of a room. This house had old sand texture and several splatter textures done over time. If the texture is bad, the house will not look good no matter what we do. Rear Bedroom Before

Lots of work was done on the window trim paint. We try hard to not allow painting over chipped or dirty paint. Painting over just adds to the problem, and it never looks as good as it might have.

The wood floor is about 70 years old, and was refinished again with a clear sealer. The old floor had a nice aged color and patina. Our Tarrytown remodel bedrooms & baths phase dealt with walls and floors first.

Rear Bedroom After

This bedroom is a real sun room – with 6 large windows. All the wood windows in the old part of the house were kept, even though they are single pane glass. We just liked them. The shades are simple white Roman shades from Home Depot. They were chosen to allow the window trim to show. We added crepe myrtles on the sides of the lot to improve the view from windows.

Hall Bath Before

This is the hall bath as we did it in 1977. It had plastic laminate on the walls around the tub and on counters. Amazingly, the laminated was still just as good as new. But, it was time for something new. We kept the cabinets boxes and 1949 bathtub.

Hall Bath After

The Hall Bath was updated with painted cabinets, new pulls, Silestone counter top, and new fixtures. The cabinets were painted a medium tone grey. Large subway tile was used around the tub.

Office Space Before

This is the office space on the lower floor. When this addition was built, in 1977, we did the floor in scrubbed aggregate concrete. That was popular then. For driveways. But, hey, with shoes on, it was fine on the floor. Someone later added carpet over it.

Office Space After

Here is the office space with the carpet removed and fresh paint. The concrete floor was ground down to remove a ton of old carpet glue. The floor was sealed, for a nice finish. The sealer material came from Cornerstone on Burnet Road – a good place for concrete surface products.
